This is going to be fun, especially since I live OTP (Outside the Perimeter) in Atlanta.  We all can see that Hotlanta has been very Luke Warm, and Matty Ice has melted away this year behind a terrible line.  Everything that could go wrong for the Red and Black has, and now all the ATL is hoping the Dirty Birds “Rise UP!!!” or nose dive into oblivion.  Now I figured the Falcons wouldn’t make the playoffs I wrote that in the NFC Predictions (granted I had the Steelers in the Superbowl vs. Niners, and I thought the Bucs would be better, so what the heck do I know.) I just didn’t foresee them being this bad.  Well I guess I’m transforming into Tim “The Tool Man” Taylor, or should I say turn into Al Borland, because if you ever watched Tool Time (Home Improvement) you know Tim could never fix anything.  Either way I’m here to tell the world “How to Fix The Atlanta Falcons”.

Speaking of Tool Time, I really could go for Pam Anderson helping me write this article.  Sorry I take that back, I’m a Married Man now.  Anyway let’s get to it:

1.  Jonathon Martin-  I know everybody just let their jaws hit the floor, but Atlanta needs Offensive Line help badly.  BADLY! even to the point that if the Dolphins release Martin, or Richie Incognito they need to jump through the hoop of fire to pick either one of them up (honestly you hope for Incognito he is a better lineman, but maybe a bigot).  If Martin is available they should give him a try, just to see if he will want to prove the world wrong and show that he can be tough and you don’t need to N-Bomb him or threaten his family on voice mails (for the record who leaves messages anymore, text harassment is the new wave).

2.  Get the team off the trainers table.  These Falcons have got to get healthy and get Roddy White, and Weatherspoon back.  They need these guys to help contribute to the team.  The injury bug has ran through the team and no one is knocking on the door to save the day, so the first needs to be the last and Roddy White needs to become the number WR he used to be.

3.  Find a way to get after the Quarterback.  I would be having FA try outs for any pass rushers that would/could at least breathe on an opposing QB.  The Falcons need to generate some kind of pass rush, and honestly Mike Nolan should start taking blitz schemes from teams like New Orleans, New York Jets, and other teams that don’t have dominate pass rushers ( no disrespect to Mo Wilkerson, cause he is a beast!).  I know the best pass rush is rushing 4 and dropping 7, but the Falcons actually have really good corners, rookies or not, they do a decent job in man to man and zone coverage.  So Nolan’s main objective is Quarterback harassment.  Throw the book at the teams every week, make the Gritz Blitz Deluxe at least if you don’t win you could possibly sell some merchandise.

4.  Change the Offense back to the early Matt Ryan days.  Go back to basics and run the ball, even if it is not effective, it will keep teams honest.  Actually when the Falcons run to the right side of the line they are averaging 4.4yds a carry, and 3.5yds running up the middle.  So stay away from the left side, but run there to keep teams honest.  Also get back to the WR, TE, and RB screen game to slow down opposing teams pass rush.  When you have a sub par line you have to do anything in your power to protect your QB so getting the ball out quickly and confusing the defenses so they can’t tee off on Matt Ryan.  Screens, Draws, shuffle passes, misdirection runs, and counters.  Sometimes you will have to frustrate the fan base and run on 3rd and longs.  The point of the offense should become no MISTAKES!!!  No 7 turnovers in 2 weeks!  Allow your defense and playing the field position game help you keep the games close and then let Matty Ice, be Matty Ice with clutch plays down the stretch to win games.  Tony Dungy once said you can win 10 games a year if you don’t beat yourself with turnovers.

5.  Maybe the fans want the high draft pick.  Maybe tanking this season will help for the future?  You needed pass rush help and yet the Falcons drafted 2 corners last draft (which I said was dumb), and you brought in a has-been Usi who has done nothing, so cut him at the end of the season.  Let Roddy White go unless he wants to take a home town discount (doubt it because I know he doesn’t tip well at restaurants).  In the draft use early picks on pass rushers and O-Linemen, and use late picks on a running back, and wide receiver.  Build the team around Julio Jones, and Matt Ryan.

Why is the smallest position in football talk the most?  Darrelle Revis and Richard Sherman have this twitter war about who’s the best corner in the league.  Of course ESPN loves it!  But notice corners and receivers do the most talking.  From The Playmaker (Michael Irving) to T.O., even PrimeTime, to DeAngelo Hall.  Is being on the outside make you king of your own football Universe?

Notice quarterbacks don’t say anything (you make get Jay Cutler vs Philip Rivers beef, or a very confident Tom Brady) and they have every right to talk.  They are steady trying to prove themselves as an elite. Even guys on the line of scrimmage going thru the trenches have a right, because they maul each other every play.  Yet corners and receivers have this swag (imaginary or real) about them as if their “god” of football.  But some receivers are not even physical. Some receivers don’t block.  Some receivers only run one route (Randy Moss). So dare I say some receivers aren’t really football players?

You can make the same case for Corners.  Some of them don’t play the run, refuse to get off blocks, whiff on easy tackles (Asaunte Samuels), we are not going to mention bad technique or blowing coverage because you bite on a underneath route.  Imagine if other positions were allowed the luxury of these mistakes?  Oh yeah they aren’t because they would get benched.  Sad thing is most corners are overrated like Revis (yeah I said it).

If your team didn’t win the Super Bowl then STOP TALKING!  Although I’m with Sherman on this topic.  Sherman has 12 int in two seasons while Revis 16 ints in 6 seasons, and I’m sorry, but Revis has been acting like a diva lately.  Did he really expect the Jets to call him? After this ninja was nowhere to be found 2yrs ago from holding out.  To quote Richard Sherman “You mad brah!”   Sherman might be running his mouth like a girl but they all suffer from little man syndrome or the “I’m insecure so I need to make myself feel better”. The people with arguably the biggest Hero, or Goat possibility (Chris Culliver in the Super Bowl) need to learn to stop talking SHIT! And just play the game.  What do you think?

As I sat down to watch the Falcons on Sunday night versus the Cowboys I got an instant feeling of Déjà Vu.  No, I didn’t see a black cat go by twice nor was I expecting Agent Smith and the crew to bust in (I will give a dollar to the first person to get the reference).  I just felt like I had been here or felt this way before about a team.  After another Falcons win,I left and hopped in my Delorean, and went back to the year 2009.

There I was,  sitting around and Hating, “I don’t believe in the Saints, they haven’t played anybody, the defense can’t stop people they just rely on turnovers, you won’t be able to beat better teams playing like that.” And the list went on, how naïve I was.  That year the Saints went on to win the Super Bowl, Dem Saints showed me.  We all know a foolish man doesn’t learn from his mistakes and after I looked at the Falcons they could be this years 2009 Saints.

Some early similarities, both had never won a Super Bowl, both used to be in the NFC West.  Both started out 8-0 (Saints actually got up to 13-0 before losing). In 2009 the Saints changed Offensive (Doug Marrone to Pete Carmichael) and Defensive (Gary Gibbs to Greg “Bounty Gate aka you don’t want to see Kyle Williams’ dad in the streets” Williams) Coordinators.  This year the Falcons hired Dirk “new Norv Turner” Koetter to handle the offense and Mike Nolan to run the Defense.  Also both teams picked up key secondary pieces in the off season, the Saints got Darren Sharper, and the Falcons traded for Asante Samuels.  I know all that is window dressing but look at the similar numbers in the first 8 games.

2012 Falcons Categories 2009 Saints
46.6% 3rd % 44.7%
68.7% Pass Competition % 68.3%
17/6 TD/INT 17/7
15 Sacks Allowed 12
Eagles Marquee Win Eagles
  Defensive Numbers
19 Sacks 19
24 Tackles for Loss 23
10 Int 16
10 Forced Fumbles 9
  4th quarter -/+ 7pts
3 Int 4
2 Forced Fumbles 3
28 Average return yds 27
43 Net punt Distance 38
10 Punts inside 20 5
Peyton Manning ??? (TBD) MVP Peyton Manning
Matt Ryan TBD Runner up MVP Drew Brees

The 2009 Saints had a killer running game that year, where the Falcons if they have an offensive weakness it’s the run game.  Though the 2012 Falcons are way better special teams wise, Matt Bryant has only missed one kick this year, where as the Saints missed numerous kicks.  Both teams struggled against stopping the run and give up a ton of yards, but as you see from the numbers they create turnovers.

I looked at the Saints first 7 victories and the combined record was 25-24, the Falcons first 7 victories and the combined record was 18-31, so you can see why the Falcons do get a bit of disrespect about not playing anybody, but the Dirty Birds didn’t make their schedule.

So does this information make you a believer? Are you starting to come around to the thought of Falcons vs Denver Broncos Super Bowl so the Falcons can get revenge and beat Peyton Manning like Drew Brees did?  Are you willing to March in like dem Saints, Falcon fans?  Unlike Sam Jackson I’m not ready to jump on the on the Dirty Bird swag bandwagon, but Atlanta does have a legitimate reason to Rise UP!! That could land them in the Super Bowl at the Super Dome, the home of WHO DAT NATION, coincidence? I think not.
