Man the energy is electric, in my apartment, because my favorite day of the year is here:  Super Bowl Sunday!  I have been in long favor of making this day a holiday and making the day after an off day for the country, but sadly enough until we get Peyton Manning or Tom Brady to become President it won’t happen.  Now everyone remember after today, please still keep getting together with your friends to do something.  Studies have shown (right here it’s real) that after football season fans go through a bit of depression and sluggishness.  Enough of the public service announcement on to the keys to unlock the Lombardi trophy.

*Disclaimer*  I dislike the Seahawks, because I’m a 49er fan (granted I do like Beast Mode, Russell “Last Name” Wilson, and The LOB, ok I kinda like the team just have to hate them because of fandom), and I’m not a Peyton Manning fan at all, to much credit for not enough playoff wins (before this season).  So I have no real bias unlike last week (I picked the 49ers!).  *Disclaimer*

* Denver Offense Key: Make the Seahawks Safeties have a bad game

The key for this offense will be how Peyton can minimize the effect of the LOB’s safeties.  I know for the last two weeks we have spoke about Richard Sherman and how he is the greatest, but he is only so great because his safeties (Thomas and Chancellor).  They are the best in the League.  Can Peyton confuse Thomas in single high safety formations (which they run a lot).  How much can he get the safeties to come and help in the run game to set up play action.  Chancellor has shut down 2 top 5 Tight Ends (Jimmy Graham and Vernon Davis) in the playoffs, if Chancellor can go 3 for 3 by stopping Julius Thomas it will hurt Peyton and the offense.  So Peyton has to move these safeties and create match ups he can exploit to free WRs or at least make the reads difficult for Thomas and Chancellor.

* Seattle Offense Key:  Feed the Seahawks WRs Skittles and abuse Champ Bailey

It hurts to say this but you have to make Champ Bailey pay.  It’s no way in hell the Broncos should let Lynch go off, if they do the game is already over.  If they stop Lynch the Seahawks need an answer, enter Harvin, Tate, Baldwin, and Kearse.  These WRs need to go Torrey Smith on Champ Bailey (Here is what I’m talking about).  Last year we saw Bailey can’t keep up with speedy WRs anymore and his time off this year with injuries doesn’t help that.  You have to get the Broncos in man 2 man looks with little safety help and exploit it.  You may only see that look 7-10 times in the game and for the Seahawks to win they have to make them pay at least half of the time they see that look.

*Denver Defense Key:  Don’t let a bit player become a star

You know you have to stop “Beast Mode” Lynch, you know you have to keep “Short Stack” Wilson in the pocket and not let him turn into Russell “Houdini Tarkenton” Wilson.  What will cost you is if you let a role player beat you, ala Desmond Howard (Super Bowl XXXI), or Timmy Smith (Super Bowl XXII).  Keep the role player just that “role players”, no rising stars allowed.  The Seahawks Offense is not as dangerous as other offenses the Broncos have faced, so don’t take them lightly.  If I had to choose who would be the player to step for the Seahawks I would say it would be Baldwin with the extra attention Harvin will get.

*Seattle Defense Key:  Let Peyton be Peyton

I know I have lost a lot of you with this one.  Or I might have lost all creditability now, but hear me out.  We all know the thought of Peyton choking during big games, but when I say let Peyton be Peyton I mean pressure Peyton to make quick decisions, or errant throws.  Take advantage of Peyton’s hate of a clustered pockets by getting pressure up the middle.  Now it wont effect Peyton in the 1st-3rd quarters, but if the game is close down the stretch you will start seeing the effects of that pressure.  When it’s close in big games Peyton has a tendency to get ultra conservative which you can use to your advantage and jump a route ala Tracy Porter.

So there you have it.  Lets see what happens at 6:25pm.  I’m choosing the Denver Broncos to win, because I just think with John Elway’s mentoring and confidence it is Peyton Manning’s year and he wont show the old Peyton attributes.

The best thing that could happen is if Richard Sherman jumps a route and takes it to the house!  OMG!!! We might get another Promo about Peyton throwing “ducks”.  Or if Richard Sherman jumps a route and misses a badly thrown “duck” and the Broncos score the game winner.  Either way “Are We Ready For The End of Football…  This Year”.

As the Denver Broncos start the real season this weekend (We know the regular season means nothing to Peyton) the Broncos and Peyton are going for a mythical journey to capture the franchises 3rd championship.  So naturally all eyes are on the hero #18.  The Broncos changed their future from the disciple (Tebow) to one of the football gods in Peyton Manning.  Leading me to say out loud What Would Peyton Do?

The Future Hall of Famer has been here before plenty of times actually, with a 9-11 playoff record including 8 one and done.  Peyton has a chance to conquer some demons, gods, and the unexpected so to speak.  First challenge the Demon, the power of the SUPER BOLO TIE CHARGERS.  A lot of analysis are picking the Chargers to win this game.  The Chargers are a current division foe that has eliminated Peyton several times (0-2 vs. Chargers in playoffs) while with the Colts.  The Chargers are hot and facing Denver coming off a bye, sounds like the Ravens of last year.

Second the other god, with a victory Peyton will play his greatest foe, Football’s greatest god Tom Brady, and the Patriots.  We all know of the history of these two competitors.  We also know Brady’s 3 rings to Peyton’s 1, or that Peyton is 1-2 vs. the Patriots in the playoffs.  If Peyton can find the Herculean strength to conquer 2 of his biggest adversaries the third one is the greatest of all.

Final adversary the Elements, and the Unexpected.  By elements I mean COLD WINDY WEATHER, and the unexpected NFC opponent.  The Super Bowl is in NY/NJ in the cold weather.  Peyton has played some of his worse games in cold weather (8-13 in games with temperature under 40 at kick off).  Since Peyton has returned from neck surgery it is noticeable that Peyton is uncomfortable in the cold weather or rather windy cold games.  Not to mention the three teams left in the NFC are huge defensive teams (Legion of Boom Seahawks, 49ers, and Panthers) and none of them seem to have Rex Grossman as their starting Quarterback.

Peyton has a huge football world to conquer.  Is it fair to say that a loss vs. the Chargers, Patriots, or the NFC representative would tarnish Peyton’s legacy?  So I say out loud again WHAT WOULD PEYTON DO?  Or should I say WHAT SHOULD PEYTON DO?  Only answer is Ascend and WIN!

P.S.  UNSPORTSMENMIC is BACK!

Matt Schaub: How can you FIX him!

Written By:

Jason “Big J” Allen
@UnsportsmenBigJ

“If it aint broke don’t fix it” is a saying we have heard over and over again.  What happens when your QB is broke?  And everything looks like it can’t be fixed?  Some are saying to bench Schaub, because T.J. Yates has own a playoff game.  Some are saying that Schaub is done and is having a career fall off similar to Jake Delhomme or Marc Bulger.  Regardless I have taken up the mission of “How do you fix Matt Schaub!”

This fix up job maybe the Wreck-It Ralph of all repair jobs I have tackled (I have written about Cam Newton last year, and the 49ers a week ago).  Majority of the time you look at what made the player successful and you try and see if the team is still doing that same thing.  In Matt Schaub’s case the Texans are still doing the same things for the most part.  Still running the ball effectively, still living in the play action pass world, and still using their athletic TE to dominate the middle of the field.  So what is hurting Schaub then?  One thing that needs to be fixed for Schaub to get back to being successful is limiting his reads.  I think he has been given more reads to make in the passing game, which accounts for indecisiveness and interceptions.  Schaub has always been a 2 read guy, basically Andre Johnson and then the TE and if nothing is there dump down to the RB.  Now with Hopkins showing he has amazing ability and seeing more two TE sets with an underrated Graham at TE, Schaub isn’t getting an easy read that he is used to.  Get him back to making the simple read and you will see the change.

Another issue that no one is talking about is the talent around Schaub.  Now pound for pound he has better talent then most QBs on paper, but really look at the talent for a second.  Andre Johnson is not the same player he used to be after all the injuries and years.  I know that’s blasphemy and majority of people have stopped reading at this point.  Yet, would the Johnson of 3 or 4 years ago been able to be covered well by Tramaine Brock?  A third stringer for the 49ers?  Don’t give me the Schaub argument because if you watched that game Johnson was getting no separation.  Look at Arian Foster, a few times during these games we expect to see that 5th gear burst through the hole that would ultimately result in 6 just is not there.  Ben Tate has been inconsistent at best in games, to the point that a not all there Arian Foster is still a way better back.  Some of the big plays that the Texans used to have protected the flaws of Schaub.  How easy was it for Schaub for the last 3 years to throw a screen and Foster took it to the house, now think about the last time you have seen the Texans even run a screen play at all?  They do have youth in Hopkins, Graham, and we know that the zone blocking scheme can make any RB look good (ask Mike Bell, Tatum Bell, Mike Anderson, and may I dare say Alfred Morris) so picking up a younger, explosive RB shouldn’t be an issue.

Look I’m not saying that Matt Schaub is not the problem, I’m just saying its fixable and can be turned around.  Next week give him the bootleg easy read throws to warm him up.  Have him air it out down field a few times in jump ball situations for Johnson or Hopkins.  Just start building his confidence.  Every game minus the Baltimore game no team has been able to totally shut down the run game, so why not have a whole drive of running the ball with a shovel, screen, or swing pass in it?  These things build your QB mentally, with the loss of Daniels for a while it will hurt, but go back to the mantra of a young QB’s best friend is his TE.  Now Schaub isn’t young by any means, but you have to repair his psyche just like a young QB.  If all else fails we can at least make fun of Travis Johnson who claimed Matt Schaub could take a team over the hump and Tony Romo couldn’t.

AFC NFL Predictions

By:  Raymond “Big Play” Miller @BpRunSportsMenm (BP)

By:  Jason “Big J” Allen @UnSportsMenBigJ (Jay)

By: Maurice “Cool Reece” Thomas @CR_UnSportsMen (CR)

Consensus is that the AFC is the weaker of the leagues, and that may be true, but when it come down to one game for all the Chips and Dips anything can happen.  So here is the UnSportsMenMic Crew predictions for the AFC.

AFC East

BP: Patriots Jets Dolphins Bills-

As long as #12 is at QB, the division will go by way of New England.  Rex’s scheme don’t lie, Jets will be better than you think, especially if QB’s limit turnovers.  Spending money don’t get you rings Miami and Buffalo is on the rise but not there yet.

Jay:  Patriots Bills Dolphins Jets-

I think the Pats will not be dominate but the division is not tough.  The Bills I think will come along late when EJ Manuel gets his bumps.  Don’t believe the Dolphins to many questions, QB? WR? RB? Pass Rush?  Sorry BP, but Jets are a dumpster fire, hell I’m considering starting Freeman in fantasy on them.

CR:  Patriots Dolphins Bills Jets-

Of course New England always find a way to win.  Miami might be that boring team you don’t want to see on Monday night, the Bills might do something when EJ Manuel gets back.  The Jets can’t figure out who their Quarterback is (shout out to Mr. Miller).  The division will be dominated by the Patriots.

AFC North

BP:  Steelers Ravens Browns Bengals

Tomlin will have the Steelers ready; missing the playoffs 2yrs in a row ain’t happening.  The champs will be in the hunt, but you can’t always replace leadership with just talent alone.  Browns will be competitive and wouldn’t shock me if there in the hunt.  The Bengels’ will take a step back, and learn the meaning of Hard Knocks.

Jay:  Bengals Steelers Ravens Browns

Bengals should win this Division FINALLY! If they can’t then they wont for another 10 years.  Steelers rebound especially with Hailey and Big Ben working together.  Ravens only a slight tumble as Flacco feels the weight and pressure of being the man (no Ray Ray to deflect attention) and the Browns will compete their butts off but they are just not there yet.

CR:  Ravens Bengals Browns Steelers

I think Joe Flacco might light it up for the Ravens. I believe in their vertical game with Torrey Smith and Jacoby Jones. One of my next articles is going to be titled “Bombs over Baghdad or Bombs over B-more”.  Cincinnati will make the playoffs and probably lose the first round.  Browns will be Browns, and Pittsburgh might be considering a new head coach after another disappointing  season without making the playoffs.

AFC South

BP:  Texans Titans Colts Jaguars
This has to be the year for the Texans it’s now or never a healthy Cushing and Super Bowl experience of Ed Reed will get them over the hump.  The Johnson and Greene combination will take pressure off Locker by slowing down the game for him; hey it helped Sanchez.  No sophomore slump for Luck but his Defense will fail him and Jacksonville is just Jacksonville.

Jay:  Texans Colts Titans Jaguars

I don’t like the Texans make up, just feel like they fold under pressure and have so much talent, but the division can’t put up a fight.  The Colts are the Andrew Luck show, and I’m sorry I think Luck doesn’t regress, but wont pull as many last second wins as last year.  Locker and Gabbert, the cancer of both Franchises’.

CR:  Texans Colts Titans Jaguars

I Have Houston leading the division followed by Indy, Tennessee, and Jacksonville. Houston will win second seed while the other teams will be sitting at home during the playoffs (nothing new for J-ville). I’m wit Jay on this one, I don’t believe Indy will make all those come backs like last year, now they are the hunted.

AFC West

BP:  Broncos Chiefs Chargers Raiders
The name Peyton Manning is good enough for 10 wins alone so expect Denver to win 12-13 which is more than enough to win the West.  KC will be in the hunt for a playoff berth.  SD and Oak may need a year or two to compete on a playoff level.

Jay:  Broncos Chiefs Chargers Raiders

Old man Manning is still the best regular season QB to ever play the game.  No one can touch him in the regular season, and while the Chiefs will be much improved they wont dethrone the Broncos.  Chargers are a straight dumpster fire, Thank You Norv Turner.  Oakland, should just hope and pray Run DMC can play a whole season, that will be their Super Bowl.

CR:  Broncos Chiefs Raiders Chargers

I can strongly see Denver going 14-2, Kansas City is gonna be the sleeper team that gets hot. If Jamal Charles stay healthy  he would be key. I’m thinking Brian Westbrook numbers for Charles.  Who cares about Chargers and Raiders, but we know we will get another boring Thursday Night Football game between the two.

Playoffs

CR:  I want to go first here; Call me Mr. Cleo or some kin to Miss Cleo the physic because I have some bold predictions for ya. Call me crazy or I don’t know what I’m talking about, but everyone said the same thing to me last year when I was driving the Seahawk fan bus.  I call it THE RETURN OF ANDY REID!  Yes you read it here first. The Kansas City Chiefs are going to the Super Bowl!  This is how they get there.

CRWild Card– Ravens over Patriots Kansas City over Cincinnati

We know the Ravens can beat them and Flacco turns into a different QB in the Playoffs.  Also I think the wheels are starting to fall off of the Brady Wagon.  Too Much Andy Reid and Charles for Cincy to keep up, this could spell the end of Marvin Lewis.

CR: Divisional Rd– Kansas City over Houston Denver over Ravens

Alex Smith playing mistake free will force the Texans Offense to produce which, will produce turnovers that the Chiefs will capitalize on to win.  Peyton Manning’s revenge, and it will be sweet, I expect a rout and that Manning will exercise the demons at least for one game.

CR: AFC Championship–  Kansas City over Denver

I figure the Broncos will beat the Chiefs twice in the regular season and you know how hard it is to beat a team three times in one season.  On a side note I think Kansas City will take it because who has more too prove than Alex Smith and Andy Reid?  Has Andy Reid ever had an accurate Quarterback?  With Alex Smith running the west coast offense I think its gonna be huge for the Chiefs.  We all know how Reid coaches his Quarterbacks. If Vick can somewhat do it, than why not Alex?

BP: Wild Card– Steelers over Jets, Texans over Ravens

Big Ben makes the plays that the Jets QB’s can’t.  This game will be a defensive struggle.  Ed Reed picks off Flacco to seal the win for Houston (Where is Kendrick Lamar when I need him “That sounds like Poetic Justice”)

BPDivisional Rd– Patriots over Steelers, Texans over Broncos

Tom Terrific continues to own the Steelers, while a windy day in Denver raises questions about Archie’s…  I mean Peyton’s decision to sign in Denver.

BPAFC Championship– Texans over Patriots

Texans get there revenge over the team that has dominated them over the last two postseason and get to the Super Bowl.  Texans just don’t wear dumb ass lettermen jackets this time.

JayWild Card–  Patriots over Ravens Steelers over Bengals

I think the youth of the Ravens will get exposed by the Sith Lord and Apprentice.  Big Ben makes everyone remember why he has 1 1/2 rings (we all know he didn’t do nothing but tackle a guy in the 1st Super Bowl run, so half a ring), and reminds the Bengals that the Steelers still run that division.

JayDivisional Rd– Steelers over Denver Texans over Pats

Steelers give Manning flashbacks to his Colt days with an 1 and done after getting the bye.  Texans get the edge with a Ed Reed and the rookie Hopkins comes up big to beat the Pats.

Jay: AFC Championship– Steelers over Texans

Welcome back to the Super Bowl Mr. Tomlin.  This will be a tight game and I think the Steelers win on last second Field Goal.

Jay:  Then we finally get that 49ers Steelers Super Bowl that never happened.
