“He is a thief. They need to bring him up on federal charges. If a man robs you with no ski mask on, he’s gonna kill you. Exactly what he’s doing — he’s killing the franchise.”- Travis Johnson comments on Tony Romo.

This Travis Johnson outburst is just another example of the criticism, excuse me I mean HATE that Tony Romo receives.  Ladies and Gentleman Tony Romo is not a bad Quarterback.  He is actually a good Quarterback and a top 10 Quarterback.  Romo has just been placed in a bad situation which is called the “Star on the Helmet Frenzy”.  Let’s look at Romo and tell me what you think.

“Tony Romo is not that guy”- Travis Johnson

Being a Cowboy QB is a lot of pressure.  You have to follow the shadows of Staubach, Aikman, and even Danny White was great for the moment (he did lead the Cowboys to 3 NFC Championships), but everyone seems to forget the QB’s that “Donned the Star” between Aikman to Romo.  Well let me remind you Quincy Carter, Anthony Wright, Ryan Leaf, Clint Steorner, Chad Hutchinson, Vinny Testerverde, Drew Hensen, and Drew Bledsoe.  I know this list is full of great Qbs.  Yet people think Romo is killing the Franchise.  This list shows the inept the Cowboys have been showing at the Qb position.  We would be calling Romo the savior of this Franchise if he played in Tampa Bay, or Jacksonville, but he has that darn Star on his helmet so the criticism abounds, but Tony Romo is that guy.

“Tony Romo has not earned a dollar he has been given in this league.”- Travis Johnson

We need to look at what our expectations of Romo.  Are we forgetting that Tony Romo was an undrafted player out of Eastern Illinois.  What are/were we expecting out of him?  Here is a list of Undrafted Qb’s that were worth a damn.  Out of that list only Moon and Warner were show stoppers, I know you will say that Delhomme played in a Super Bowl, but let’s not forget the terrible life with Delhomme after that Super Bowl.  So basically undrafted Qb’s don’t do well and you kind of have to exclude Moon from the list because he was undrafted because of race issues not because he couldn’t play.  Again I ask what did you want or expect.  From where he started until now I think Romo has done a great job for himself and has earned way more than his fair share of money in this league.

“Tony Romo was given everything he has gotten.”- Travis Johnson

Look around the league at the best QB’s in the game and you will notice a great correlation, good/great coaches.  Brady/Belicheck, Brees/Payton, Eli/Coughlin, Ryan/Smith, Peyton Manning is his own coach according to everyone, but even Fox has had a Super Bowl appearance with Delhomme as his QB.  Also outside of the Saints, all these QBs have had stable organizations.  Romo had Parcells for a year and half, then the “Stay Puff Marshmellow” Wade Phillips, and “I Have No Control” Jason Garrett.  Romo has never had a stable organization or a dominate coach during his time in Dallas.

“At one time, he had five Pro Bowlers on the offensive line”- Travis Johnson

We all talk about the talent he has/had around him, I dare you to really look outside the paper of that talent and look that the real footage of it.  What running backs has he ever had that were outstanding?  Marian Barber? Felix Jones? Julius Jones? Come on, really…  and Murray can’t stay healthy to save Romo’s life.  The Wide Receivers have been a bit better, but not great, T.O.? Miles Austin (had some good years)?, Patrick Crayton? Terry Glenn (past his prime)?, Sam Hurd?, Roy E. Williams?, and Dez Bryant (who is becoming a stud but is a knucklehead)?  Romo’s best weapon has and will always be Jason Witten.  Minus Brady, and maybe Brees (but don’t forget the talent he had in San Diego and then Brees didn’t put up great numbers) all the “Elite QB” have had “Elite” type WR, and decent run games.  Also look at the offensive line Romo has had to play under, we give a lot of love to Flozell Adams, but he was a walking Offsides, and holding penalty don’t believe look it up (2008 14 penalties, 2009 13 penalties, 2010 8 penalties, but his season was cut short because of injury).  Adams damn near lead the league every year in those categories.  The last 2-3 years the O-line has been horrible.  In 2012 and 2011 Romo was the 6th most sacked QB, in 2010 43rd most sacked QB 2009 9th most sacked QB, so I wouldn’t say those “five Pro Bowlers” were doing great protecting Romo.  Lets not forget Romo’s ability to avoid being hit and sacked.

“Matt Schaub will get the job done,” …“I believe in him. I played with him [Schaub] and I’ve played against him. He [Schaub] can take this team to a Super Bowl”- Travis Johnson

That’s funny because Schaub has the same amount of playoff wins as Romo does 1.  Now I know your asking “how is he going to defend the bonehead plays and playoff misfires.”  Honestly I can’t really totally defend it all, but a good chunk of it I can defend by saying BRET FAVRE!  That was his idol growing up, and let’s be honest Favre has had plenty of choke worthy games in his career.  Romo didn’t get blessed with the rocket arm of Favre but he might have gotten cursed with the gunslinger mentality of Favre.  Also we harbor on his 1-3 playoff record, well if you take away one great play run from a lot of “Elite” QB’s they are just normal.  Take away Aaron Rodgers 3 playoff wins in his Super Bowl year and he is dreadful.  How about Rodgers going 15-1 and getting knocked out of the playoffs.  We are not even going to mention Peyton’s below .500 playoff record.  Even as we stand Matt Ryan is 1-4 in the playoffs, with playoff blow outs on his resume.  All I’m saying is if Romo makes one Super Bowl run, then his record would become 4-3 and he is a different QB.

“When Tony Romo got to Dallas he had everything around him and is a loser,”- Travis Johnson

I’m glad a guy with a 55-38 record is a loser.  Still we focus on the terrible with Romo on his “lack of Clutch” people don’t realize that Romo engineered 18 fourth quarter comebacks since 2006, five of which came last season.  He has the 5th most 4th quarter comebacks among active players.  Also among active players Tony Romo has the highest passer rating in the 4th quarter (102.1).  In this whole argument I have never uttered a word about the numbers Romo puts up every year.  Look at Super Bowl Champion QB Joe Flacco, we give him a lot of credit, but he has won playoff games throwing for 36 yds.  He also has had dreadful regular seasons, but all is forgotten because of his playoff run.  Eli Manning went through a stretch of 5 games without a touchdown thrown.  Even everyone’s new darling Matt Ryan last year had two games of 3 ints and 5 ints, but we forget because the Falcons won the game.  Yes Romo will self destruct sometimes, but so does every QB.  The better question to all the haters is find a better QB out there right now that can do a better job?  Not a starter, but a back up or free agent.  I doubt you can, but with Romo you know you are getting between 4100-4900 yards, 25-31 touchdowns, and 13 ints a season.  So we are looking at a 25 to 13 td to int ratio, so here is a list of other Qb’s in that range Matt Ryan, Eli Manning, Ben Roethlisberger, Joe Flaco, Matt Schaub, and Philip Rivers.  Again the expectation of the “Star on the Helmet” and playing in “The House that Jerry Built” changes our image.

“it’s frustrating that the average fan doesn’t recognize how good a quarterback the Cowboys have in Romo”.- Troy Aikman

“I think Tony Romo is a championship quarterback… He can take a team to a championship. He can’t do it by himself, but I really believe he can do it.”

– Roger Staubach

“Do the Cowboys have a Super Bowl quarterback? Yes. Do they have a Super Bowl team?  No.” -Danny White

Hopefully I have convinced you to lay off Romo, he is a good QB, and deserves better.  If he ever gets one ring on his finger the whole media will once again be saying “How Bout Dem Cowboys! and Romo”

P.S. I’m a Niners fan so this defense is in all sincerity, so I must really mean what I’m writing.
